Perinatology – What is risky pregnancy?

Perinatology is the science of pregnancy and birth that deals with the health of the mother and fetus during the perinatal period, pregnancy and the first four weeks after birth, for planning mothers with certain risk factors.

Perinatology is very important for improvement of the health of pregnant women and their babies, early detection of fetal anomalies, scanning for chromosomal anomalies, prevention of abortion, miscarriage and stillbirth, early detection and prevention of premature birth, determination of possible problems in multiple pregnancies and management of monitoring pregnancy.

Some of the risk factors in high risk pregnancy are observed as the existing risks of expectant mothers while others may be risks carried from the previous pregnancy. Sometimes pregnancy does not start as high risk but risks may arise from the current pregnancy, for the fetus or birth.

Early pregnancy ultrasound during the 6th till 11th week of pregnancy, assessment of multiple pregnancy during the 10th till 12th week, embryo reduction, nuchal translucency scan during week 11 till 14, chorionic villus sampling, 3D and 4D ultrasound in the 1st trimester, amniocentesis during weeks 16 till 18, second and advanced ultrasound in weeks 18 till 23, premature birth scan, cordocentesis between weeks 18 till 20 and later, 3D and 4D ultrasound in the 2nd trimester, detection of fetal development anomalies between weeks 28 till 32.

The OB-GYN department of our hospital uses all current practices. Studies are done to determine all risks that might occur during pregnancy. All inspections including ultrasound, scanning for down syndrome and amniocentesis can be conducted. Vaginal delivery and, when necessary, caesarian section can be done. There is a neonatal intensive care unit with a neonatal doctor and nurse on call.
