Dementia: An Overview of Memory and Quality of Life
Aging and Change
Some changes in memory, thinking, and behavior can be observed with aging. However, if these changes begin to affect daily life, this situation may indicate the onset of the dementia process.
Alzheimer's
It is the most common type of dementia. It is a progressive brain disease characterized by the impairment of brain cells and functions. It accounts for 60-80% of dementia cases worldwide.
Every Alzheimer's patient faces dementia; however, not every dementia patient has Alzheimer's. In other words, while dementia is a broad umbrella term, Alzheimer's is a specific disease under this umbrella.
Parkinson's
It is a slow-moving and progressive nervous system disease caused by a decrease in a substance called dopamine in the regions of the brain that control movements. Although it is usually seen in individuals over 60, it can also start at younger ages.
It is a disease that progresses over time, and although it cannot be completely eliminated with treatment, symptoms can be kept under control. The goal of treatment is to increase the patient's quality of life.
