Pediatric Neurology

Pediatric Neurology is a multidisciplinary science department that aims to prevent, reduce, diagnose and, if possible, treat neurological problems in children and provides them with a better life.

The child is not a minor; it is a growing and developing human being. The nervous system of the child is a system that shows continuous growth-development-maturity from fertilization to adulthood and is the latest system to complete its development.

The healthy development of a child’s nervous system is of great importance for human and community health: due to the nervous system being damaged during pregnancy, at birth or after birth, or due to genetically inherited diseases, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, mental retardation, mobility disorders, autism, muscular diseases, spinal cord and peripheral nerve diseases can occur and the entire life of the child and even the life span can be affected.

The child’s organism is a whole, other system and organ-related diseases can also affect the development and functioning of the child’s nervous system. For example, if the thyroid gland does not work due to congenital reasons, it may lead to mental retardation, or an infant with heart disease may develop a stroke. Emergency neurological problems in children are not rare either; Coma, paralysis and seizures are the most common neurological ailments in children. These urgent neurological problems can lead to permanent damage, and even loss of life.

Neurological diseases do not affect only the victimized children, their families and close circle are affected by the need for treatment, rehabilitation and care. At the same time, the fact that these patients are unable to participate in social production, and that a considerable share of national income is devoted to their care and treatment, makes these diseases a social problem. Having a child with a neurological disorder can be a serious problem primarily for the child, but also for the family and society.

A child with a neurological problem, like any child, has the right to live well and not to suffer. We are responsible for ensuring that these children receive treatment and rehabilitation if possible, and benefit from health services as well as increase their quality of life.

In our country, Pediatric Neurology has been an independent discipline for more than forty years. In the past years, the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up of children with neurological problems has been sustained by a small number of neurologists and pediatricians who have been very committed to our profession. First, Prof. MD Yavuz Renda and Prof. MD Kalbiye Yalaz of Hacettepe University School of Medicine, then Prof. MD Selçuk Apak of Istanbul Medical School have established the Department of Pediatric Neurology; specialist education began in 1963 and in 1973 the Ministry of Health accepted pediatric neurology as a sub-specialty. The Turkish Society of Pediatric Neurology was established in 1980.

In our hospital, pediatric neurology outpatient services, neuroradiological examinations (cranial MRI, BBT (brain tomography), ABR (brain stem hearing potential examination), sleep and awake EGG, video monitorized EGG, multidisciplinary pediatric neurology patient follow-up and counseling services are provided.
